Steve Johnson:FSO-PV - Program Visitor (Marine Dealer Visitor)
Steve Johnson began his lifelong love affair with the sea at the age of 13, when he was asked to permanently join the otherwise adult crew of a cruising class sailing yacht on the Great Lakes. For the next 5 years, he learned to "hand, reef and steer" over thousands of hard-fought miles, in the notorious conditions of Lake Erie, except for an interlude as a midshipman at the Culver Military Academy's Summer Naval School.
After college, he migrated immediately to the shores of San Francisco Bay, bought his first of four sailboats, lived aboard the two largest for 11 years, and for 17 years sailed continuously in fair weather and foul. His bluewater experience includes yacht deliveries from the Turks & Caicos to Florida, and British Columbia to Los Angeles. In 2002, he went over to the dark side, and purchased a 52 foot, 52,000 lb. Carver motor yacht, now an operational facility, and enjoys it to this day. He is an experienced seaman, navigator, coastal pilot, shipwright, electrical engineer, and computer programmer. He is also a commercial aircraft pilot with multi-engine, instrument, land, sea, and helicopter ratings, and a diver of 50 years experience.
In the Auxiliary, he is seeking to organically combine his various interests, and to encourage novel ideas, projects, and cross-department teamwork. Johnson is a Vessel Examiner, San Francisco Ferry Boat Auditor, and Recreational Boating Safety Program Visitor. He has AUXSEA, as well as ICS 100, 200, 210, 700 & 800. Outside the Auxiliary he was for many years a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, corporate executive, and for the last 25 years has been CEO and principal communications and marketing strategist for a boutique, high-technology public relations firm in Silicon Valley.
