Marine Safety Program:

It's a new year - make it the best - for you and your country

You are a hard worker, getting ahead, moving up in the world. While you’re working at making a better life for yourself, you can also make a real difference in the lives of your neighbors and your country. Best of all, have fun doing it, and without leaving your life behind.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the non-military branch of the Coast Guard. We help keep our country, and our friends and neighbors safe, by protecting boaters and our waterways.

How You Can Help

The Coast Guard Auxiliary has expanded its Marine Safety Program and WE NEED YOU!

Vessel Examiners conduct a fire drill aboard a commercial vessel. Work directly along side the Coast Guard in the following activities:

Port safety and security inspections
Commercial vessel safety and security inspections
Marine environmental response assistance
Abandoned vessel surveys
Container inspection assistance
Mariner licensing/documentation/course audits
America's Waterways Watch
... and so much more!

Keep California Safe

Flotilla 12-04 Auxiliarists patrol the Santa Monica Bay, keeping a watchful eye on the Pier. The Coast Guard has stepped up efforts to monitor our ports, bridges, waterways and traffic in and around these. These activities help keep us safe, by monitoring and acting on suspicious activity, and ensuring laws and regulations are abided by. You can directly help these activities by assisting with examining vessels, including fishing, shipping, passenger and cruise ships, as well as container examinations. You can also participate with patrols to monitor the area.

Protect and Improve Our Environment

A capsized fishing boat pollutes a nature preserve.Everyone knows our environment is at risk. We've all made changes in our daily lives to help lessen the damage - recycling, reducing garbage, buying organic foods. But, through the Marine Safety Program, you can have a hands-on role in directly protecting and improving our environment. Educate yourself and the public about how to be a "clean" boater. Monitor for spills and help prevent and clean them. Help prevent the spread of Aquatic Nuisance Species, which harm the natural plants and wildlife in our ecosystem. There is no greater satisfaction than knowing you have personally made your next trip to the beach more enjoyable and safe.

Benefits to You

The Marine Safety program is one of the most unique in the Auxiliary. On each mission, you will directly impact our community by helping insure the safety of our area waterways and ports and vessels, as well as improving our future by helping to protect the environment. It is an exciting, fun program, where there is always a new challenge.

The program can also help you get ahead. Improve your resume and your leadership skills while having fun and helping your community. Working with the Coast Guard Auxiliary has many benefits of military experience, without the danger, or going overseas!

Best of all, it is flexible. Most missions occur during weekdays, and take just a few hours - keep your weekends for yourself! Participate as often as you wish. The Auxiliary will provide a comprehensive, free training program, to fully prepare you. As a member of the Auxiliary, any other programs that interest you will be fully available for you to take advantage of.
