Our long-time, beloved member, Dr. Norman Shultz, crossed the bar on 15 MAY 2010. A memorial service was held 20 MAY 2010 at Del Rey Yacht Club. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was well-represented, which was appreciated by the family. This page has been set up for rememberances of him. Born December 19, 1915 in Los Angeles, California, passed away May 15, 2010 at his home in Marina Del Rey. Beloved husband of Rena Shultz, father of Gail Shultz McLatcher, Mark Shultz, Lori Bergvall, and Stanley Steinberg; father-in-law to Robert McLatcher, Sherry Shultz, and Susan Ashley Steinberg; and also survived by granddaughters Jessica and Joanna Shultz and Erica and Jillian Bergvall. Norman, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, attended Los Angeles Polytechnic High School, and graduated University of Southern California, School of Dentistry in 1941. During World War II, he served in the United States Public Health Service, then the Navy. Dr. Shultz practiced dentistry in Los Angeles for nearly fifty years and was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. He was a Blue Lodge Mason, and a past member of Westwood and Century City Shrine Clubs. Norman founded the Dental Clinic at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Los Angeles. An avid yachtsman, he was a member of Del Rey Yacht Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Dr. Shultz served for several years on the Board of Governors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Tel Aviv University. Of all of his numerous accomplishments, his most passionate endeavor was helping to found and build the Tel Aviv University, School of Dentistry, in Ramat Aviv, Israel. Admired and respected, possessing boundless energy, Norman touched so many lives, on a professional, humanitarian and social basis; and was appreciated for his good nature and sense of humor. His sincere warmth and giving heart will sorely be missed. Private family services will be held. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration to commemorate the life and times of Norman Shultz to be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 12 p.m. at Del Rey Yacht Club, 13900 Palawan Way in Marina Del Rey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norman's honor and memory to American Friends of Tel Aviv University, 9911 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035. www.aftau.org

Dr. Shultz was a fixture in 12-4's boating safety classes. In his later years, he was affectionately dubbed the "FSO-telephone," in recognition of the many years worth of students and members who were welcomed into the yacht club gate by his familiar voice.
